Marte Aas

In this project, Marte Aas seeks to problematize representation critical and sex political issues on the basis of a desire to write girls into history and thus create a separate historical identity. The exhibition opens October 12th with a concert by Røde sauer (Red sheep).

The artist Marte Aas has worked together with two young female rappers from Oslo. Mari and Stina have been rapping together for three years and are about to make a name in the rapping community with their band Røde sauer. In addition, they have collaborated with the break dancer Mari, also from Oslo. In this project, Marte Aas seeks to problematize representation critical and sex political issues on the basis of a desire to write girls into history and thus create a separate historical identity.

The project consists of large scale portraits of Mari, Stina and Mari on the façade of Olso S. On the Digital wall inside of Olso S., Aas presents a video in which they perform their Macho Rap.
On today’’s young music scene, we see that boys who play in bands are overrepresented. There are about 500 boys’’ bands for every girl band. This imbalance related to sex distribution is particularly strong when it comes to rap music. In addition, parts of the rap genre are filled with sexist and sexually discriminating attitudes. This imbalance also is reflected in the writing of music history where one has also chosen to give the male artists the leading roles, whereas female musicians are focused on under marginalizing captions such as “girl bands”, “girl rock” or “lady vocalists”.
